Road to record: Anna Wijk’s path to becoming the WFC all-time top point scorer

In yesterday’s game against Latvia, Anna Wijk reached a milestone: she scored her 74th WFC point and became all-time WFC top point scorer.

We take a closer look at her 77 points!

Wijk has scored her points in 33 games in total, starting in 2009. With 20+57 in total, it’s clear she’s more a passer than a shooter.

2009: 1+7 points

In Anna Wijk’s WFC debut game in 2009 – she was 18 at that time – Wijk scored one assist in the 17-3 won game against Norway. What followed were 0+4 points against the USA, but zero in the two games after, against the Czech Republic (group stage) and Latvia (quarterfinal).

In the semifinal against arch-rival Finland, Sweden scored ten times and won the game 10-2, with two points for Anna Wijk (1+1). In the last game of the tournament, Wijk won her first gold medal after Switzerland was beaten 2-6. Her personal score in that game was 0+1.

2011: 2+9 points

With 8 points in her debut WFC, Anna Wijk showed the audience she quickly became one of the better players on this stage. In 2011, she even increased her numbers with two goals and nine assists. In the group stage, the games against Japan (0+0) and Denmark (0+1) weren’t too remarkable – but her 1+6 points against the USA were!

What followed were two assists in the 19-0 won quarterfinal against Norway and a goal in the 4-2 won final against Finland.

2013: 7+12 points

In 2013, Wijk surpassed herself with a total of 19 points. In the group stage, she scored 5+7 points, against Finland (1+0), Poland (1+3), and Russia (3+4).

In the quarterfinal game against Latvia, Wijk managed to gain seven points again (2+4) in the 12-2 victory, followed by one more assist against the Czech Republic in the semifinal.

2015: 4+9 points

Four years ago, Anna Wijk scored a bit less than in 2013, but still: 13 points in six games is pretty impressive. Most assists were scored in the group stage match against Germany (1+5), after which three points followed against the Czechs (1+1) and Latvia (0+1).

After the 2013 (won) final in which Wijk didn’t score a point, 2015 became her second final without a goal nor assist. In the quarterfinal against Slovakia (1+1) and the semifinal against Switzerland (0+2), she did, however, manage to increase her numbers.

2017: 5+8 points

To start off with the final right away – because yes, Sweden reached the final again – Anna Wijk didn’t score a single point in this match. Did it matter? No, as Sweden won the gold after a penalty shootout against Finland.

In the finals before this game, the quarterfinal and semifinal, Wijk scored seven points, but all in the QF: 4+3. In the group stage, one goal and five assists were scored, against Germany, Poland, and Switzerland.

2019: 1+12 (so far)

After three group stage games, Anna Wijk has already scored 13 points – although only one goal. After five assists against Slovakia and four against the Czech Republic, her first assist yesterday against Latvia became the record-breaking 74th assist. Her total now is 77 points.
