Here’s what happened during WFC Day 8, the day of the semifinals.
The second-to-last day of the WFC is over. Four games have been played: two placement games and of course the semifinals.
We’ll have a look at all games that have been played today:
Germany – Slovakia (5-8th place)
Latvia – Poland (5-8th place)
Sweden – Finland (semifinal)
Switzerland – Czech Republic (semifinal)
Germany – Slovakia 1-6
To be honest, this was not the best game of the tournament. Both teams lacked the energy to put full pressure on their opponent, which might have to do with the number of games in such a short time. Both Germany and Slovakia had already played five games in the last six days; Germany even had its last game (against Sweden) yesterday evening!

The Slovaks opened the scored in the first minute of the second period, while all other goals fell in the final period. Michaela Sponiarova scored 2+1 and helped her team to a 3-0 lead, before Germany found the net in powerplay. After this goal, Slovakia scored two more powerplay goals and one regular: 1-6. Slovakia moves on to the battle for 5th place against Poland, while Germany meets Latvia for 7th place.

Latvia – Poland 1-6
Poland moves on to the battle for 5th place, against Slovakia. The Poles played a strong game against Latvia and in the end, even took out their goalkeeper to practice playing empty net, as a preparation for tomorrow’s final game! Latvia meets Germany in the placing game for 7th spot.
Poland took an early lead as after 42 seconds, Dominika Buczek had already found the net. The team doubled the score, but Latvia struck back with what become their first and only goal. Poland managed to score twice in both the second and the third period, which led to the final score of 1-6.

Sweden – Finland 5-4
Again, Sweden and Finland didn’t fail to entertain the crowd. Where many would have suspected Sweden to rule the game from start to end, it was actually quite even. Sweden couldn’t upset Finland the way Switzerland did in the group stage, despite the absence of goal-getter and world’s best player Veera Kauppi (illness).
Sweden took the lead three times (1-0, 4-3, 5-4), and twice, Finland equalized, once even from 3-1 to 3-3. However, a third comeback wasn’t meant to be and Sweden became the first finalist. Tomorrow, they battle for gold against the winner of Switzerland – Czech Republic, while the loser of that game awaits Finland in the bronze final.

Switzerland – Czech Republic 7-6 (ot)
This has been the craziest comeback in ages. The Czech Republic seemed to reach the WFC final – for the first time in history – as they were 2-6 up with only two minutes left. However, Switzerland scored four goals in 6-vs-5 and even scored the winning overtime goal.
Tomorrow, Switzerland faces Sweden in the WFC 2019 final, while the Czechs have to collect themselves to fight for bronze, against Finland.
