Here’s what happened during the first day of the quarterfinals, Day 6!
The sixth day of the WFC is over! We’ve seen six games, of which two were quarterfinals.
We’ll have a look at all games that have been played today:
Thailand – USA (15th place game)
Denmark – Singapore (9-12th place game)
Japan – Estonia (13th place game)
Australia – Norway (9-12th place game)
Finland – Slovakia (quarterfinal)
Switzerland – Latvia (quarterfinal)
Thailand – USA 10-6
The USA kicked off this match in absolute great fashion quickly taking a 3-0 lead against a sleepy Thailand. After ten minutes, however, something seemed to have woken up the Thai squad who turned the game around in a matter of minutes. Thanks to two goals of Thanaporn Tongkham and one goal by Lalita Kuiraphanew Thailand went into the first break with a tie. Today was Tongkham’s day and she almost single-handedly took down USA as she didn’t stop after her two first-period goals. In fact, she scored 3 more in the final two periods while USA could only deliver 3 more goals. This means that Thailand finished 15th while USA ended place 16.

Denmark – Singapore 9-4
Both teams had a long and tiresome floorball journey in their back but this seemed to affect Denmark the least, and in particular goalgetter Cecilia di Nardo who played a hell of a game. She scored no less than 5 times this game, giving her the status of the WFC top goal scorer of all time.

Japan – Estonia 4-3
Japan has played quite a good tournament but had the bad luck of being in the group of Denmark and Norway, two teams who used to start in the higher two groups. Against Estonia, the team played a tight game with relatively few goals. Although it was Estonia to take a 2-0 lead, the Japanese players kept hoping and turned the game around in the second period with three goals by themselves, the 3-2 right from the faceoff after scoring the equalizer. With just minutes to play and a marginal 4-3 lead for Japan, Estonia played empty net for a while but this didn’t result in any more goals in this nail-biting placement match.

Australia – Norway 2-7
Australia can look back at an excellent performance during the WFC2019 despite being knocked out in the playoff round. The team gave everything in this previous match and this was visible during today’s placement game against Norway. Norway was just the better team today, and could rely on Rikke Hansen as the motor to drive the team towards success with 1 goal and 2 assists. Norway was in the lead the whole game and confidently took the game down.

Finland – Slovakia 8-6
Definitely the match of the day was Finland meeting Slovakia in the first WFC2019 quarterfinals. A dream start from Slovakia opened up the gates for an intense and fierce battle. Slovakia shocked the audience with two goals in not much more than one minute. However, Finland quickly retaliated and scored four times in the first 8 minutes including a hattrick by Oona Kauppi. With a 5-2 score, Sara Piispa scored in the powerplay, the game went into the first break. But the Slovaks didn’t give up. In a tight second period it was Paulina Hudakova, who would score no less than 4 times this game, to score the 5-3 in a penalty shot and also score the 6-4 after Sara Piispa scored the 6-3 for Finland.

Switzerland – Latvia 10-6
For Switzerland it was Isabelle Gerig who stood up in the first minutes of the host team’s game against Latvia with a hattrick before 7.40. It marked the beginning of a match Switzerland dominated from start to finish. By the end of the first period Switzerland had already increased the gap to 5-0. The Swiss didn’t stop expanding their score in the second period but also lost their focus which results in another 4 goals for the home team but also 2 goals from the Latvians. The game ended 10-4 for Switzerland who are going through to the semis.
