Here’s what happened during the final day of the Group Stage, Day 4!
The fourth day of the WFC is over!
We’ll have a look at all games that have been played today:
Singapore – Australia
Denmark – Estonia
Czech Republic – Slovakia
USA – Thailand
Poland – Switzerland
Sweden – Latvia
Singapore – Australia 4-3
Singapore and Australia battled for the victory in Group D, with Singapore as winner, despite being down 0-2 after the first period. Singapore scored three times in the second period, turning around the score. When at the start of the final period Singapore even scored 4-2, things started to look tough for Australia.
The Aussies scored the 4-3 in powerplay, and with more than five minutes left to play, anything seemed possible – especially when Singapore received another 2-min penalty. However, no further goals were scored and Singapore won the group, with Australia as runner-up. In the hunt for the quarterfinals, Singapore now meets Germany, while Australia faces Poland.

Denmark – Estonia 8-3
Denmark moves on to the playoff stage after beating Estonia 8-3. Denmark played a strong game and put pressure on the Estonian defense right from the start. Lina Voldby opened the score and Mathilde Christensen – who was chosen MVP afterwards – doubled the Danish lead shortly after. All of a sudden, Estonia struck back and scored 2-1 right before the first intermission.
The second period had the same setup of the first one: two goals for Denmark, followed by one Estonian goal, which led to 4-2. Estonia tried to get back into the game in the final part and there were definitely possibilities, but the gap between the teams, after Denmark’s 5-2, never decreased to less than three goals anymore.
Estonia moves on to the games for 13-16th places, while Denmark plays against Slovakia on Wednesday, the playoff game with a ticket to the quarterfinal at stake.

Czech Republic – Slovakia 19-3
Slovakia has suffered its second big loss today: 19-3 against the Czech Republic. After their 1-23 loss against Sweden, it’s the second time in the group stage the team had to suffer this many goals. The game was one-sided in the first period, with the 8-0 scores as a result. In the second period, the Slovaks could keep up a bit: the p2 result of 5-3 led to a score of 13-3 after forty minutes. With a 6-0 score in the final period, the result was 19-3 in the Czech Republic’s favor.

USA – Thailand 5-10
The USA and Thailand both lost their first two games and were focused on finally getting two points, on which Thailand succeeded. The game went back and forth in the first period, but Thailand increased its lead from 1-2 to 2-6 into the second period and this gap turned out to be (far) too big for the USA.
Both teams will move on to the games for the 13-16th place, starting off tomorrow with matches against Estonia (USA) and Japan.

Poland – Switzerland 0-11
Poland faced a tough match: a strong opponent plus the home crowd cheering their team towards the goal. However, Poland stood strong and managed to keep their defense up as long as possible, with a 0-3 score after the first period. The Swiss managed to score five times in the second period (0-8), followed by again three goals in the final part.

Sweden – Latvia 16-1
We can be short about this one: Latvia started off quite well, especially in defense, but the Swedes were clearly too strong. The final score was 16-1, in the game where Anna Wijk scored her historical 74th WFC point – an all-time WFC record!
