Five Things Sweden Needs to Improve After Their Loss to Finland

Sweden’s 5-2 loss to Finland at Malmö Arena was a frustrating game for the team and their fans. Despite their early dominance in possession and chances, Sweden failed to capitalize on their opportunities and allowed Finland to grow into the game. Finland’s adaptability and discipline exposed Sweden’s weaknesses, leaving Sweden with critical areas to address as they look to improve in future games. Here are the five key areas Sweden needs to work on based on this match.

1. Better Finishing

Sweden’s high shot count didn’t translate into goals. Poor shot selection and missed opportunities meant their early dominance had little impact. Improving shot accuracy and creating higher-quality chances will be essential moving forward.

2. Too Forward Focused

Defensive lapses cost Sweden dearly. Their inability to deal with a countering Finland, in combination with too much focus on attacking, left them vulnerable for counters. A more disciplined and communicative defense is needed.

3. Discipline When Pressure Mounts

Penalties were Sweden’s undoing. Zacarias Ulriksson’s late penalty was a turning point, allowing Finland to extend their lead. Staying disciplined in tight games is vital to avoid giving opponents easy opportunities.

4. In-Game Adjustments

While Finland adapted tactically, Sweden stuck to their initial plan even as it stopped working. The inability to counter Finland’s higher press in the second period led to turnovers. Sweden must improve their flexibility and make smarter adjustments mid-game.

5. Mental Toughness

Sweden’s frustrations were evident as the game progressed, leading to rushed decisions and mistakes. Maintaining focus and composure, even when trailing, is crucial for staying competitive in high-stakes matches.

Conclusion

Sweden has the talent to take it far into the WFC, but it’s clear they have lots to improve on after this clear defeat versus a disciplined Finland.
