WFC 2019: Only four teams left in the race to gold – Day 7 summarized [Patron Only]

Here’s what happened during the second day of the quarterfinals, Day 7!

The seventh day of the WFC is over! Two placement matches and of course the quarterfinals.

We’ll have a look at all games that have been played today:

Singapore – Australia 1-3 (11th place game)
Denmark – Norway 2-3 (9th place game)
Czech Republic – Poland 11-4 (quarterfinals)
Sweden – Germany 26-2 (quarterfinals)

Singapore – Australia 1-3

Like in the group stage, the placement match for 11th place was tight and tense. Despite a substantial amount of shots on goal (Singapore’s Fariza Zabir made 12 saves while Shannon Barnes made the insane amount of 37 saves!) there were not many goals in this game. Singapore took the lead with a goal by Amanda Yeap but from then on it was Australia who worked on their goal score.

Denmark – Norway 2-3

Denmark and Norway played an intense game with few goals. The many games that the teams already had played prior to this match was certainly felt in the body and mind of the players because the match was probably not the best performance on either side. A great shorthanded goal by Rikke Hansen in boxplay sealed the deal for Norway in the final minutes.

Czech Republic – Poland 11-4

Poland put up a good fight against Czech Republic. With a quick opening goal Poland woke up Czech Republic who quickly answered with 4 goals. However, the Polish players showed great efficiency in their counter attack and managed to end the first period with 4-3. In the second period it was Martin Repkova who found the net 3 times and together with an early goal from Nela Jirakova, Czech Republic managed to cruise themselves towards still waters with a 8-3 lead.

Sweden – Germany 26-2

Germany had a hard time against Sweden in the quarterfinals of the WFC2019. Sweden didn’t take long to find the German net, looking for an early lead and with that aiming to demoralize the German players. This meant a comfortable 8-1 lead for Sweden at the start of the first break. It was a team effort as none of the players really stood out individualy in the first twenty minutes. Having already decided the game in the first period, the game cooled down a bit although the Swedes found the net more times, giving the team a comfortable victory against Germany with 26-2 and a ticket to the semifinals where they will meet Finland in a repetition of last year’s final.

When executed well, the slapshot is the fastest shot in floorball. Where do the speed and power come from? That’s what I’m gonna dive into today, helped by ice hockey and… physics! Fact: in 2011, the record for the hardest ice hockey shot was broken: Denis Kulyash (Russia) managed to shoot with a speed of […]
