In the last group phase game of group C, Slovakia won its third game by beating Australia with very big numbers: 1-21.
Coach Michal Jedlicka gave his first line a break, giving the other two lines the chance to shine in front of all 1.912 spectators – and he wasn’t let down. Slovakia didn’t wait too long to take the lead and during the first period, they extended it to 0-3. Australia tried to keep the score low as they would only remain at 3rd place in the group if they would lose with less than ten goals against or more.
Slovakia scored its fourth goal right at the start of the second period and things seemed to worsen for Australia as they received a 2-min penalty. However, while playing shorthandedly, the Aussies found their way to their first goal: 1-4. Slovakia’s Katarina Klapitova scored 1-5, after which the team started playing with three lines again. First line player Denisa Ferencikova quickly took advantage of her playing time: with two goals she helped Slovakia to an 1-7 lead. The score at rest was 1-11, as Slovakia scored four times in the last three minutes.
25 seconds was all it took for Slovakia to further increase the lead. Paulina Hudakova – yesterday good for nine points – scored her first of the day: 1-12. Directly in the next shift, Viktoria Grossova scored her first WFC goal ever. Australia could counter every now and then, but Slovakia dictated the game. The first two lines showed impressive team play, a promising thought for the playoffs. If you want to watch highlights of the game, just rewatch the full third period.
