Singapore 4th AOFC country to qualify for World Floorball Championships

After Japan, Australia and Thailand, Singapore has become the fourth AOFC country to qualify for the World Floorball Championships, as they defeated New Zealand in a decisive game: 7-1.

In the group phase Singapore defeated Korea (5-3) and Malaysia (0-8). Japan was just too strong (2-3), but still the team finished at 2nd place in Group B. In the quarter-final of the AOFC they met New Zealand (3rd of Group A). At stake was a spot in the semi-final, but winner would also get a ticket to the WFC in Slovakia.

From the beginning it was clear that Singapore was the stronger team, although New Zealand kept its goal clean for almost half of the game: at 26.19 Singapore scored its first goal (1-0). The many shots on goal (29 vs. 7) were a promise for more goals and in p2 this happened quite shortly after the first goal. Within ten minutes a powerplay goal, an own goal and a ‘normal’ goal were scored, putting the score after 40.00 at 4-0.

During p3 Singapore scored three more times, before it was finally time for New Zealand to get its goal. With the 7-1 victory Singapore will be present at the WFC in December. Next to that they also move on to the semi-final, in which they will battle Australia for a spot in the final. New Zealand meets Malaysia in the hunt for 5th place.
