Report: AIK Defeats League Leaders FC Helsingborg 9-8

In a nail biting game between league leading FC Helsingborg were playing AIK, who to say the least had tough game against Falun (lost 17-2) last round. Helsingborg made a strong comeback in the final minutes but were 1 goal short, and AIK got away with 3 points.

Early on AIK showed great energy and 2 minutes in they took the lead through Carl Nordström. They kept creating chances, many of them on quick counter-attacks. Andreas Stefansson extended their lead 11 minutes in, and only minutes later their captain Patrik Hagberg made it 3-0 in powerplay. With only 9 seconds left Daniel Johnsson scored Helsingborg’s first goal, and the score was 3-1 after 20 minutes.

No goals scored until the 9th minute in the second period, when Kevin Lieback Asp in powerplay made it 4-1. 3 minutes later Joel Kanebjörk was sent off for a 2 minute penalty, and Mika Kohonen didn’t need more than 1 second in powerplay before scoring. 12 seconds later, Jonathan Nilsson made it 4-3, which gave Helsingborg good momentum, but they didn’t manage to equalize. Instead AIK’s Oskar Hagberg hit the net and a relieved AIK was back on track again. With 6 seconds left Andreas Stefansson scored his 2nd goal for the night, and the numbers were 6-3 heading in to the third period

AIK had taken over the momentum and 3 minutes in Patrik Hagberg extended AIK’s lead, once again in powerplay. Helsingborg replied with a goal from Carl Nilsson, who had spent the first two periods on the bench. Nilsson gave FCH great energy and 8 minutes later Linus Nordgren made it 7-5. But AIK were strong and Stefansson scored his third goal for the night, which was followed by another goal by Joakim Olsson.

With 4 goals to catch up a desperate Helsingborg took a timeout and decided to take out their goalkeeper with 6 minutes left, a smart move which gave result. With almost 100% ball possession, Helsingborg scored 3 goals and were just 1 more away from equalizing. But AIK barely held them away and got the 3 points – and perhaps more important for them, confidence after the brutal loss last game.
