To sort out who’ll stand as opponent for Switzerland in the quarterfinal USA, who finished at last place in Group D faced Norway, 3rd of Group B. After a good opening to the 3rd period, USA almost made a comeback. However the Norwegians barely got away in the end with the final result 5-4.

It was Norway who got themselves up in a lead to start it off and it came from Karin Farnes’ stick who after bouncing the ball back and forth with Kristine Naess Haug found a gap to put in 1-0. USA replied with 2 goals, also from an experienced scorer; Michelle Linhart who completely caught everyone off guard with her slaphot goal at 1-1. The lead that USA had put themselves in didn’t last more than a minute before Norway was back on even ground once again.

After an even 1st period, Norway stepped up and dominated the 2nd one with 3 goals scored and none conceded. Farnes stood for 2 more goals to complete her hat-trick; 1st one already 24 seconds after the break, and the 2nd one with 5 minutes left of the period. With a 5-2 lead, the Norwegians headed into the final period with a solid grip of the game.

Just like their opponents in the 2nd period, USA opened up the 3rd in the best possible way. Within just a few minutes, they’d scored 2 quick goals and with 17 minutes to go of the game they were now only 1 goal behind the Norwegians. Following 10 minutes passed with great tension. Both teams took turns at creating dangerous chances, but neither managed to find the net. With 2 and a half minutes remaining USA went for the timeout, but not the 6v5 play until the very last seconds – and to no success.

With the victory, Norway advances to the quarterfinals where they’ll play giants Switzerland, ranked as the 3rd best country in the world.
