Japan nearly surprised Poland, and more about U19 WFC Day 2 (Div B) | Recap & highlights

Division B of the U19 WFC consists of Group C and D. These eight teams are aiming for one thing: winning the division and making it to Division A. Here’s what happened on the second day of the group stage.

Group C

USA – Russia 4-8 (highlights)
Another defeat for the USA, despite their solid start: the team took the lead and managed to make it to the first break with a 1-1 score. However, Russia’s strong game put them into a solid lead halfway the game, which led to their second victory of this tournament. Five of the goals scored in total were made in powerplay situations.

Japan – Poland 2-3 (highlights)
Japan keeps on surprising, but again, without getting any points. After yesterday’s small loss against Russia (7-6), the team now gave Poland a hard time. Directly into the third period, Japan even took a 2-1 lead, but the Poles equalized shortly after and netted the winning goal 37 seconds before the game was over.

Group D

New Zealand – Germany 1-16 (highlights)
Germany has secured a spot in the semifinals by crushing New Zealand. The team has now won twice and scored 35 goals already. Within five minutes, the Germans had taken a 0-3 lead and they never stopped scoring.

Canada – Slovenia 4-11 (highlights)
It was crucial for home team Canada to win this game, as it would keep their hopes alive of reaching the semifinals of this division. The first period ended with a 1-2 lead for Slovenia, but four goals later, the gap was 1-6 already. Slovenia and Germany will now play for the victory in Group D, while Canada and New Zealand go up for ranking games for 13th-16th spot.
