Australia has won its second game of the WFC 2018 and can now start preparing for the playoffs. Thailand was defeated 3-4.
Daniel Gartner, who had scored 5 (3+2) points already in the first two games, opened the score, but Thailand’s Alexander Rinefalk equalized. In the second period, the Australians had a strong phase and scored three times: Liam Perry (1-2), Tomas Gartner (Daniel’s twin brother, 1-3) and Daniel Gartner again (1-4).
In the last period, Thailand did a great job by fighting its way back into the game. Cheered on by 6.583 spectators, first Tnakit Kayairit and then Pawat Thaidit found the net: 3-4! The team took out its goalkeeper, but no further goals were scored.
The result brings Australia, as runner-up in Group C, to the playoffs in the hunt for the quarterfinals. Its opponent will be Finland, Norway or Denmark. Thailand will continue the tournament in the hunt for 13th place, starting off with a battle against the third-ranked in Group C (Canada or Japan).
